Teach the Youth

Overview

The University of Technology, Jamaica Students’ Union Community Service initiative was birthed in 1999 through a programme called ‘Teach the Youth’ where learning centres were established in the communities of August Town, Kyntre, Tavern and McLeod Basic School otherwise known as Highlight View. Over a three week period, the UTech Students' Union facilitates this educational programme with an approximated three hundred students between the ages of 8 and 17. Throughout the duration of the programme volunteers from the University of Technology, Jamaica and the National Youth Programme teach several core disciplines and prepare and serve lunch to these students daily. The volunteers also organize and execute outings for these students culminating in a Sports Day at the end of the programme.

Goals & Objectives

The core goals and objectives of “Teach the Youth” are to:

  • Strengthen Socialization and Integration among persons living in these communities with other communities.
  • To act as a relief for students who intend on keeping their minds active for the summer
  • Promote a good image of the Students’ Union and the University.
  • Strengthen the transmission of useful and productive values and attitudes to surrounding communities while having a positive impact on the minds of the youth within them.
  • Act as a catalyst in helping to curb the current illiteracy problem currently plaguing the nation.
