As registered students you are a part of the Students’ Union. Since its inception the Union has been the “Refuge” and will continue to effectively serve, represent and protect students’ rights. Consequently, in continuing our legacy the benchmark “Innovate and Sustain-The way forward, quality above quantity with service surmounting self” will ensure accountability and will spearhead our efforts in promoting your academic, spiritual, social, cultural and physical development.

The afore- mentioned are all vital to your University experience and as empowered students, the Students’ Union Council encourages you to familiarize yourselves with all student responsibilities, policies and ordinances outlined in this handbook.

Welcome to all new and returning Students' to the University of Technology, Jamaica. It is with overwhelming joy that I serve in the capacity of 1st VP Academic Affairs for the academic year 2011-2012. It is a privilege to serve a body with such a long history and illustrious achievements, led and built up in the past by some of the most distinguished leaders of our time.

The Students' Union Council is the official body for student representation on the Campus of the University of Technology, Jamaica. All registered students pursuing a course of study at the University of Technology, are full members of the Students Union.

The Council is entrusted with promoting, fostering and developing the educational, social, cultural and economic interests of Union members to the University community and on the national as well as the international level.

The Students' Union is a multi-faceted organization run by the Guild of Students. It is the center for the hub of student activities (cultural and entertainment) and the perfect spot on campus to lime, relax and unwind. The Students' Union has a mission to effectively serve and protect the rights of students promoting their academic, cultural and physical development, while fostering relations with the wider community.

As a Union, we have many challenges that seek to limit our growth and development, but they can be address through hard work and dedication. I will not be deterred by the challenges that lie ahead as with the help of God and the Students' Union Council, my portfolio will become one that will shine as a beacon in the Council and in the wider University Community. As your Vice President, I believe in justice, fairness and equality, I will stand resolute to ensure that my students’ rights are not violated.  Each and every student should be aware of their right and responsibility, by holding the university accountable for anything written in the students’ handbook.

As an individual who poses great advocacy skills  I will be more than able to ensure that all policies and procedures that is set out by the University is beneficial to the students well-being here at the University. Keeping up to date with all the academic issues of the students will be one of my main priorities. I will work along with the president to ensure that our Council maintains a high level of professionalism as it relates to students representation. As the Chairman of the Board of representatives, I will ensure that each representative is quipted with the necessary tools to serve and represent their constituency. By doing this I will better be able to garner the needs and issues of the students to make representation at the University Academic Board.

I sincerely hope that this year will be a fulfilling and productive one, where the academic and social needs of our students can be met. I will be working with the relevant administrative officers to ensure that these are accomplished in an effective and efficient way. With the help of my predecessor and my Academic advisor I will be able to fill that gap of high expectations of our students and other well-wishers. I am looking forward to a productive year that will bring much success as I am here to serve and to represent. ”Think Change; Leadership at its best”, let this be the theme of our hearts as we journey through what is expected to be a challenging year. I encourage you to utilize all means of communication used by the University so as to never be uninformed, unprepared and do your part to assist the University in its effort to contribute to your holistic development and take full responsibility of your own learning; remember this statement as you will be constantly reminded that “You are here to read for your degree”. It is my wish that you will have a productive year as you strive for excellence and strength to pull through all the obstacles and grief that may come your way. As Vice President Students Services I was entrusted by you the students to provide welfare services, I will do everything that I had planned and I will try to touch each and every student’s heart as this is what our council stands for.
I implore you all to obtain information on how to utilize our resources and “Be in the know”, know about your school, the Students’ Union, your council members, and the services we provide. To all returning students, welcome back to a new and exciting year. As students, you are an important part of our community of scholars and we value your contributions and participation. There are so many opportunities available here.

I encourage you to take advantage of all that our campus has to offer. Challenge yourself with something new, join one of our many student clubs, volunteer for community service projects, run for student government, or participate in an intramural sport and make your experience a good one.

As the Executive Secretary of the Students' Union, it is my job to ensure that the Students’ Union meet and offers the best services to you, with our theme in mind ” INNOVATE AND SUSTAIN: THE WAY FORWARD” I implore you to make the best use of your opportunity here, as time wasted can never be regained .
