Welcome to all new and returning Students' to the University of Technology, Jamaica. It is with overwhelming joy that I serve in the capacity of 1st VP Academic Affairs for the academic year 2011-2012. It is a privilege to serve a body with such a long history and illustrious achievements, led and built up in the past by some of the most distinguished leaders of our time.
The Students' Union Council is the official body for student representation on the Campus of the University of Technology, Jamaica. All registered students pursuing a course of study at the University of Technology, are full members of the Students Union.
The Council is entrusted with promoting, fostering and developing the educational, social, cultural and economic interests of Union members to the University community and on the national as well as the international level.
The Students' Union is a multi-faceted organization run by the Guild of Students. It is the center for the hub of student activities (cultural and entertainment) and the perfect spot on campus to lime, relax and unwind. The Students' Union has a mission to effectively serve and protect the rights of students promoting their academic, cultural and physical development, while fostering relations with the wider community.
As a Union, we have many challenges that seek to limit our growth and development, but they can be address through hard work and dedication. I will not be deterred by the challenges that lie ahead as with the help of God and the Students' Union Council, my portfolio will become one that will shine as a beacon in the Council and in the wider University Community. As your Vice President, I believe in justice, fairness and equality, I will stand resolute to ensure that my students’ rights are not violated. Each and every student should be aware of their right and responsibility, by holding the university accountable for anything written in the students’ handbook.
As an individual who poses great advocacy skills I will be more than able to ensure that all policies and procedures that is set out by the University is beneficial to the students well-being here at the University. Keeping up to date with all the academic issues of the students will be one of my main priorities. I will work along with the president to ensure that our Council maintains a high level of professionalism as it relates to students representation. As the Chairman of the Board of representatives, I will ensure that each representative is quipted with the necessary tools to serve and represent their constituency. By doing this I will better be able to garner the needs and issues of the students to make representation at the University Academic Board.
I sincerely hope that this year will be a fulfilling and productive one, where the academic and social needs of our students can be met. I will be working with the relevant administrative officers to ensure that these are accomplished in an effective and efficient way. With the help of my predecessor and my Academic advisor I will be able to fill that gap of high expectations of our students and other well-wishers. I am looking forward to a productive year that will bring much success as I am here to serve and to represent. ”Think Change; Leadership at its best”, let this be the theme of our hearts as we journey through what is expected to be a challenging year. United we stand, divided we fall.
